I love old homes. Although, describing a home as "old," especially in a society that works so diligently to prevent old age, may seem too negative or simplistic a way to describe the classic homes we have here in Rochester, but to me, an "old" home has rightfully earned not only the name, but the character, achieved through time. Those cracked walls...the squeeky, sloped hardwood floors, and those sun beaten, weathered exteriors have stood the test of time, and while they may not be as graceful now as they were their first few decades of life, they still deserve respect, if for no other reason than they provided a safe haven for those that dwelled within them. They've been witness to generations of life, and given the chance, I'm sure they'd have many stories to share.
If you're unfamiliar with Rochester and its old homes, yet you know that you want to buy one of these timeless beauties, then you'll need to check out the areas in which you'll find them.
The Kutzky Park area, here in Rochester, MN, has many beautiful homes...and some, well, not so beautiful. The Kutzky Park neighborhood is in transition, and thanks to its residents and their neighborhood association's efforts, Kutzky is again becoming a treasured neighborhood, and many of its charming homes are being brought back to life through repair and renovation. As you drive up and down the streets of Kutzky, you'll see that there is a lot of pride taken in these homes, and while they're not the largest or most grand of Rochester's old homes, they're authentic, dignified, finely crafted, and they're filled with families...yound and old...small and large...and you may just find yourself wanting to be a part of Kutzky!
Just on the south side of 2nd St. SW, you'll find St. Mary's campus. And, just south of St. Mary's, you'll find historic Pill Hill, also referred to as "Old Southwest." If you're looking for a more majestic home than you'll find in the Kutzky Park area, Old Southwest & Pill Hill won't disappoint!
There is a wide range in property values in the Kutzky Park and Old Southwest neighborhoods, as there is in just about every other neighborhood, so don't assume that you can't afford the classic home of your dreams! Depending on the condition, location, and current market, you may find that you're able to invest in one of the many classic old homes we have here in Rochester. Depending on your budget, the home you find may need some attention in order for its character, grace & warmth to shine again, but when you're done...if you listen closely...you may just hear your home whisper "Thank You." Restoring and/or maintaining one of these timeless beauties is something to be proud of, for sure.
Beyond Kutzky, Old Southwest & Pill Hill, you will still find many other classic older homes to consider here in Rochester. Throughout SE, NE & just north of Kutzky in NW Rochester, there are many smaller, but yet equally charming homes to consider. Take the time to explore all the near downtown neighborhoods of Rochester, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the number of options you'll have if you're looking for a classic home.
